茄子视频 alumna Joette Salandro 鈥77 Receives Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence

Joette Salandro, a 1977 music alumna of 茄子视频, was one of three recipients of the Diocese of Greensburg鈥檚 first Golden Apple Awards for teaching excellence.

Joette, a performing arts teacher at Greensburg Central Catholic Junior-Senior High School, received a surprise visit to her classroom on Feb. 13 by Diocesan Superintendent Maureen Martseller to notify her 鈥淧ublishers Clearing House-style鈥 of her award. She received her award from Bishop Edward C. Malesic at the first Celebration of Catholic Schools Breakfast on March 9 at the Greensburg Country Club.

Joette Salandro and Bishop Edward C. MalesicThe Golden Apple award honors outstanding educators for their distinction in and out of the classroom, commitment to Catholic values and devotion to teaching or administration in diocese schools.

At GCC, Joette teaches vocal and instrumental music, drama and music theory, directs the seventh and eighth grade chorus and the high school choir and band. She also directs four plays every school year, including a drama and a musical for both the junior and senior high students.

Joette earned a master of fine arts degree in Opera Theater from Carnegie Mellon University and studied at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va., earning a music certificate. Prior to joining GCC in 1995, she taught in schools in Virginia and served as director of music at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Greensburg.

Joette serves in music ministry at her home parish, St. Bartholomew Parish in Crabtree, Pa., and as choir director and cantor at St. Vincent Basilica Parish, Latrobe.聽

Joette said she is 鈥減assionate about teaching and learning.鈥澛

鈥淢ost importantly, I have the freedom within the Catholic school system to assist students in their faith formation through daily prayer, liturgical celebrations and the study of religious music.鈥
