“This is where I had my very first violin lesson, when I was two,” Persin told the sold-out crowd at the beginning of the Quartet’s performance. She then proceeded to demonstrate just how much she’d learned in the intervening years, performing – along with Austin Hartman and Hyunsu Ko, on violin, and Jacob Braun, on cello - a challenging program featuring works by Felix Mendelssohn, William Bolcom and Antonin Dvorak.

No one who experienced the Quartet’s bravura performance at Ƶ would be surprised to discover that it is considered one of the top young American quartets, or that it received the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 2003. Yet the members of the Quartet reflect the group’s performance style, polished yet accessible, top-notch professionals who returned for their encore in SHU basketball t-shirts (courtesy of Persin’s uncle, head basketball coach Tony Morocco) and spent almost an hour after the energetic performance talking and laughing with young fans.

Diane Persin, Mary’s mother - and the one responsible for that violin lesson her daughter attended at Ƶ at the tender age of two - couldn’t have been happier with the Quartet’s performance. A recipient of an education certification from Ƶ, Diane looks forward to future performances in the University’s new Center for the Performing Arts. “Maybe,” she says, “we can come back for the opening!”

The Biava Quartet appeared at Ƶ as part of the Ƶ University Concert/Lecture Series, in collaboration with the Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra. For more information on the Biava Quartet, please visit www.biavaquartet.com.
