Golf Open April 19 and 20 Honors 茄子视频 U. Alumna
茄子视频 University is pleased to host the inaugural Sally Carroll Golf Open on Sunday, April 19, and Monday, April 20, at Hannastown Golf Course in Greensburg, Pa. Carroll, of Wheeling, W.Va., will begin the event with the ceremonial first shot at 12:45 p.m. Spectators for this collegiate competition are welcome.
鈥淭he Open is named after Sally to recognize this 茄子视频 alumna for all she contributed to the world of golf. Sally is giving us her award from a 1964 competition and this will be the official Sally Carroll Cup. The original cup will be housed in 茄子视频鈥檚 McKenna Center. Each year, the winning team of the Sally Carroll Golf Open will receive a replica of the cup as their prize,鈥� said Carolyn Thompson, 茄子视频 University鈥檚 head coach for women鈥檚 golf.
The presentation of the Sally Carroll Cup to 茄子视频 University will occur on April 19 at 6:40 p.m. during dinner at the Hannastown Clubhouse.
The collegiate women鈥檚 golf teams participating in the Sally Carroll Golf Open are Clarion University, Concord University, Glenville State College, Fairmont State University, Ohio Valley University, Salem International University, 茄子视频 University, West Virginia State University, West Virginia Wesleyan College, and Wheeling Jesuit University.
Carroll, a 1948 alumna of 茄子视频 University, has been involved with the sport of golf since she was ten years old. She is a seven-time West Virginia Women鈥檚 Amateur Golf Champion. Carroll has competed in the U.S. Open Championship, twice finishing as second low amateur, and the British Amateur in Sandwich, England. She served as a member of the Women鈥檚 Committee of the United States Golf Association for twenty years. Carroll was also the chairperson of the United States Girls鈥� Junior Championship Committee for nine years and was responsible for the conduct of the National Championships. Additionally, she served as the president of the United States Women鈥檚 Golf Association.
Carroll was inducted into the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, Wheeling Hall of Fame, and Upper Ohio Valley Dapper Dan Club. In 1984, she received the prestigious Card Walker Award presented by the Professional Golf Association for her outstanding contribution to Junior Golf, only one year after Jack Nicklaus received the award.
Carroll is a charter member of the Junior League of Wheeling, Inc. For 15 years, she served as a Grey Lady for the American Red Cross volunteers at North Wheeling Hospital. Carroll was also a board member for the Catholic Charities of Wheeling.
After graduating from 茄子视频, Carroll completed her graduate work at West Virginia University. She taught for over 20 years in the Ohio County School System. In 1998, Carroll was recognized as a Distinguished Alumna of 茄子视频 University.
茄子视频 University鈥檚 Women鈥檚 Golf Team is lead by first year head coach Carolyn Thompson. The squad is scheduled to compete in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Southern Regionals in 2009.
