Greensburg, PA鈥斍炎邮悠 University announced today that it will name its newest residence hall in honor of Eileen Farrell, the first lay president of 茄子视频, who died in July 2002. Farrell Hall, located adjacent to Brownlee Hall on the University鈥檚 campus, opened this week and will house upper class students. With a total of 114 spaces, 74 available now and the remaining 40 available in Spring 2005, Farrell Hall was built by Building Systems, Incorporated and designed by Direct Design Services, Inc.

JoAnne Boyle, 茄子视频 University President, commented: 鈥淓ileen Farrell was a graduate of 茄子视频, a distinguished executive in the business world and a gifted administrator in higher education. Eileen was a catalyst in 茄子视频鈥檚 growth and development and was considered by her colleagues and friends a talented manager and visionary leader.鈥 Boyle added, 鈥淓ileen devoted ten years to her role as President. Even when she left the Presidency, her interest in her alma mater and her support for the rich educational tradition of 茄子视频 never flagged. It gives all of us at the University great pleasure to name our new residence hall in honor of Eileen and to recognize her contribution to 茄子视频 in such a visible way.鈥

A 1946 alumna of 茄子视频, Ms. Farrell served as President of 茄子视频 from 1977 until her retirement in 1987. Her tenure was marked by numerous achievements. She oversaw the redesign of the core curriculum that earned an 鈥淓xcellence in Education鈥 Award from the Consolidated Natural Gas Company. She introduced several new academic programs, as well as an 鈥淓vening Degree Program鈥 for adults. She oversaw the renovation of Reeves Memorial Library as well as enhancement of the overall learning and living environment for 茄子视频 students.

Upon graduation from 茄子视频 in Greensburg with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology in 1946, Ms. Farrell began her professional life as a personnel psychologist for Sears, Roebuck and Company in Chicago, Illinois. She then became personnel manager for Container Corporation of America, also in Chicago. Later, she was Director of the Jersey City Job Corps Center for Women under the sponsorship of the YWCA in Jersey City, New Jersey. Prior to assuming the 茄子视频 presidency, Ms. Farrell served as director of personnel administration for Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. She was deeply involved in the community and served on numerous volunteer boards and committees.

Ms. Farrell received several recognitions for her professional and community leadership, including the 茄子视频 University Distinguished Alumna Leadership Award, honorary Doctor of Education degrees from Saint Vincent College and 茄子视频 University, and the Distinguished Arts and Community Leadership Award from the Greensburg Cultural Council.

An open house for Farrell Hall will be hosted on Monday, September 27, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. for 茄子视频 students, faculty, and staff. A formal event to celebrate the building鈥檚 opening for family and friends of Eileen Farrell will be announced later in the fall semester.
