The Westmoreland Symphonic Winds Presents Music Of War And Peace
A native of Uniontown Pa., Nobel Peace Prize winner General George Catlett Marshall is considered by many to be one of the most important figures of the 20th century. One of his lesser-known but most profound quotes, 鈥淭il Men No Longer Die in War,鈥� is the inspiration for this work by composer, David Holsinger. 鈥淢usic of War and Peace鈥� also includes Holsinger鈥檚 鈥淭o Tame the Perilous Skies,鈥� Robert Spittal鈥檚 鈥淧acem, Hymn for Peace,鈥� and the premiere of 鈥淢oments鈥� by 茄子视频 University music student and composer Luke Mayernik, which also features baritone soloist Marc Tourre, fine arts department head and senior high choir director for the Greater Latrobe School District. The Westmoreland Symphonic Winds is pleased to once again feature the writing of Pittsburgh composer, Samuel R. Hazo in 鈥淓ach Time You Tell Their Story,鈥� with poetry by Dr. Samuel J. Hazo.
The Westmoreland Symphonic Winds is a wind and percussion performance and educational organization. Literature and ensembles of the Westmoreland Symphonic Winds include Concert Band and Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and Combos, Chamber Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Ensembles. Membership is comprised of approximately 70 auditioned musicians including music degree students from 茄子视频 University, professional musicians, and talented avocational musicians. Formed by Kathleen M. Campbell, Associate Professor of Music at 茄子视频 University in Greensburg, the Westmoreland Symphonic Winds has been providing quality programs since 1986. Campbell, a graduate of 茄子视频 University who holds a Master of Music in Wind Conducting from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, founded the group not only to enhance the ensemble curriculum for 茄子视频 music students, but to provide a quality and challenging musical outlet for community musicians while contributing in a new and unique way to Westmoreland County's cultural heritage. By striving for the highest possible performance standard and actively extending the learning process throughout adult life, the Westmoreland Symphonic Winds' mission is to provide an outstanding example of music education for the community surrounding it. Westmoreland Symphonic Winds鈥� educational outreach and partnership programs include sponsoring jazz festivals and clinics, soloists, clinicians, and guest conductors, exchange programs with area schools (including the 茄子视频 University Community Music Program Youth Honors Band), scholarship funding and lab opportunities for student conductors, composers, and orchestrators.
